Corner Country Outback Australia
Milparinka Courthouse, NW NSW The Corner Country of New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia includes Broken Hill, Tibooburra, Thargomindah and Innamincka. It is a fascinating area full of history and diverse land forms. I spent a fair bit of time there in the late 1980s and have visited a few times since. I will update the page after I visit the area again. The area is full of great campsites. Among them are Tibooburra’s Dead Horse Gully, the waterholes along the Old Strzelecki track, the waterholes in The Cooper, near Innamincka, the sandhills around Merty Merty Station, Depot Glen at Milparinka, Fort Grey, Nocundra and numerous others. The fishing is good in the Wilson River at Nocundra and in The Cooper around Innamincka. There are yabbies in the dams too, if you can con one of the locals into taking you out to net them. There are many lonely graves here together with the unusual aboriginal graves at Tibooburra and the cemeteries at Mt Brown and Milparinka. A number of Australia’s early explorers lost their lives and were buried around this area as well. o The rabbit shooter’s daughter. The reunion between a rabbit shooter and his daughter just before he died. o Missing grave White Cliffs turn off. This grave site was cleared during road works. o Lost rabbit shooters. Even locals can get lost out here. o "Put your clothes on. There's a police car behind us!". Where is a policeman when you want him? Right behind us as we got bogged in a creek! o The Dig tree: Centre of the Burke and Wills Saga. A sacred place in Australia's history. o UFO night: It's bad enough being bogged in the middle of nowhere without seeing a "UFO" as well!
