Outback Lonely Graves
IF NO GENTLE HANDS HAVE FASHIONED SNOW WHITE WREATHS ABOVE. GOD HAS LAID HIS OWN WILD FLOWERS ON THE LONELY GRAVES OUT WEST. (Inscription on the lonely grave of John William Davis, aged 4, who drowned at San Marino, far north South Australia) Interested in Outback Lonely Graves or curious about one of the gravesites you may have seen in your travels? Outback Secrets. com has the ONLY complete list of details and the exact locations of the forgotten graves between Marree and Alice Springs. These are scattered along the route of the Old Ghan Railway and The Overland Telegraph Line. You will also find details and locations of other grave sites in or around the Corner Country of New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia that I have visited, photographed and researched. In 1986 Mum found, while “growing” the family tree, that her side of the family was descended from Ludwig Becker’s brother. Becker, of course was the artist and naturalist attached to the tragic Burke and Wills Expedition. He shares with Purcell and Stone, one of the loneliest and loveliest gravesites in Australia on the banks of Koorliatto Waterhole, Bulloo Downs Station, SW Queensland. I visited his grave site in 1987 (an adventure in itself). I was then hooked on the quest to find other remote sites of history and tragedy. I found most locals and other travellers became interested in my quest for lonely graves and offered to help. This gave me the opportunity to really “get into” the bush. Take a tip from me, research your particular interest as you travel. It could be photographing Australian Animals, researching anything to do with the Outback or anything that takes your fancy. In the past 20 years my family, many of my Mintabie mates and I have travelled thousands of kilometres back and forth, often covering the same ground time and again in my research. I have been helped by researchers in Adelaide, opal miners in three states, pastoralists, Dingo Fence maintenance crews, stock-yard builders, park rangers, a stone water tank builder, drinkers and publicans and outback identities.
