Mt Dutton-Oodnadatta
Lonely Gravesites

The Mt Dutton-Oodnadatta area has a couple of interesting grave sites as well as three cemeteries.

MOUNT DUTTON

• This lone grave (probably Patrick Ellegate) is very noticeable from the road and appears to have many visitors.

Patrick Ellegate

ref. Adelaide registry book 264, page 304

Died August 1889, aged 63.

OODNADATTA

• Most of Oodnadatta’s cemeteries are well looked after.
The pioneer Cemetery is beside the Track at the South end of the town, the general cemetery is to the east of this and the Afghan Cemetery is behind the dam, North of the Township.

• However one of the areas pioneers, Cherry Ah Chee, was buried at Hookey’s Hole, south of the township. Ah Chee and his partner, Ned Chong, had an extensive market garden on the edge of the waterhole and used to supply the township with fresh produce. (See Horrie Simpson's Oodnadatta.)
His headstone was apparently sent away for restoration and has not been replaced.
I haven't been able to locate his grave but someone in Oodnadatta must remember it.
