Tookaninna Waterhole
Tookaninna Waterhole
• ALBERGA CROSSING WATERHOLE (Tookaninna) is on the track from Oodnadatta to Mount Dare. Engage four wheel drive, then turn to the east in the Alberga river bed, and follow it for about 500m. When full this is the best camping spot I have seen in the centre. The water is filtered as it runs in through the sand and is crystal clear. The waterhole is about a kilometre long and about 100m wide and lined with magnificent gum trees. The small sandy beach would rival any on the coast. But the best thing is that it is far enough off the main track to be hidden from the tourists rushing through on their way to Dalhousie or Oodnadatta. This is an interesting area and may have been the site of the original Oularinna homestead. The remains of stone sheep yards and old buildings are located north-west of Tookaninna on the edge of Elbow Waterhole. The road is part of the spectacular and largely unknown Andado Track to Alice Springs. The
grave of Frederick Sanford,
one time owner of Oularinna Station, is hidden in the spinifex covered sand hill north of the old steel chimney which is lying beside the road. The “inna” part of the names throughout this part of Central Australia is usually associated with a source of fairly permanent water.
