Outback Trip Travel Plans

Waterhole Alberga River
Travel plans rules # 1, 2 and 3
Travel slowly. Camp early. Don't try to fit too much in. (either into your vehicle, or into your itinerary) Try this idea for your next trip. We choose a destination, research it, make a rough itinerary, invite our mates, throw in some camping gear and some food, and set off. If we see a set of tracks winding off into the distance, hear about something special from a new drinking mate, find an interesting sign or if anything else catches our attention we can change our agenda to suit. Unfortunately not everyone has the time to do all this but you can still learn a lot from “Geoff's basic travel plans”. (I reckon you should allow for travelling only about 300km per day on dirt roads. Leave plenty of time to “stop and share” experiences on the way, especially if you are in a group or with children. You’ll find unexpected secrets by stopping and walking around a bit beside the road. Look for animal tracks, new plants or shady creek beds.) 1. Basic Travel Plans • Study this website carefully (and others if you have to) • Pick the destinations you like and list them. • Estimate your distances and travelling time. • Fit this schedule into your time frame by dropping or adding destinations (high points). • Learn as much as you can about your high points. • Share your final ideas with others in your group and discuss and amend if necessary. This will save arguments later and build excitement in your fellow travellers. • If travelling as a group always allow for a possible split up along the way where one lot may decide to branch out on their own. (It is sometimes interesting to note the contrast between an excited group heading out and the same grumpy group heading home a couple of weeks later.) • Plan your campsites carefully if possible. Allow for alternative campsites if your itinerary changes any time. Remember, plan to: Travel slowly, Camp early, Don't try to fit too much in. Remember also: You are out here to enjoy yourselves. NOT TO RACE ALL THE TOURISTS TO THE NEXT CARAVAN PARK!
